| "Win People To Your Way of Thinking"
At times we may struggle to get co-workers, family members or friends to agree to do a certain thing.
How to get people to cooperate with you?
Here are 12 guidelines to winning people to your way of thinking: 1) The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.
2) Show respect for the other person's opinion. Never say, "You're wrong."
3) If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
4) Begin in a friendly way.
5) Get the other person saying, "Yes, yes" immediately.
6) Let the other person do a great deal of the talking.
7) Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.
8) Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.
9) Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
10) Appeal to the nobler motives.
11) Dramatize your ideas.
12) Throw down a challenge.
Dale Carnegie, "How to Win Friends and Influence People"
Dale Carnegie's suggestions along with common courtesies can do wonders for relationships in the workplace. The simple "Please, Thank you, I apologize, What are your thoughts on...? How do you feel about...?" can reduce the tension that seems to build in an environment like the workplace.
As we become more familiar with the people with whom we work, interact or live, we stop using these basic courtesies. As the saying goes, "Familiarity breeds contempt." Being civil to and cooperative with others can bring harmony to all environments. So the next time you ask for something, make sure that you are using your civil words... "Please and thank you." |
