Poor Self-Esteem vs. Healthy Self-EsteemPeople with poor self-esteem often rely on how theyare doing in the present to determine how they feelabout themselves. They need positive externalexperiences to counteract the negative feelingsand thoughts that constantly plague them. Even then,the good feeling (from a good grade, etc.) can betemporary.Healthy self-esteem is based on our ability to assessourselves accurately (know ourselves) and still beable to accept and to value ourselves unconditionally.This means being able to realistically acknowledge ourstrengths and limitations (which is part of beinghuman) and at the same time accepting ourselves asworthy and worthwhile without conditions orreservations.
